During a period of economic unrest and uneasiness about the State of Washington budget, it is becoming a common story for agencies around the area to reduce services. We here at Kent Youth and Family Services are doing just the opposite and are introducing a new one, the Infant and Toddler Mental Health Program. This expansion of our Counseling Program is aimed at children from 0-5 years old.

Research shows that this is the most important developmental period in a person’s life. That is why we want to ensure that every child who enters our doors has the building blocks for a successful and productive life. The services accomplishes this aim by working with parents or caregivers on healthy attachment, support for the primary relationship and creating healthy environments, The service will also provide a combination of agency based counseling, as well as in home therapy and baby/parent support groups with an emphasis on education and parenting skills.

We believe and research shows, making these early investments in an infant or toddler’s life now will lead to a reduction of problems down the road. This means less kids in trouble with the law, more kids graduating from high school and fewer people relying on the mental health system.

Here at KYFS, we have three masters level counselors trained in Infant and Toddler Mental Health with two others in the process. We also have the space to house the program and unique PR materials to market the program. So, whether you are brand new to the world or are a teenage expert, Kent Youth and Family Services has you covered.

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

The Safeco Insurance Foundation Grant

In this line of work, it is always assuring when community stake holders show their belief in the work we do. This praise can come in many forms. From social media likes, pats on the back at a meeting, a small donation or large grant, affirmation from your peers makes you believe in the work you are doing. When a company like Safeco Insurance says they believe in what you are accomplishing and want to assist you achieve more with a $15,000 grant, it is hard not to beam with pride.

Last November, the Safeco Insurance Foundation awarded Kent Youth and Family Services with a $15,000 grant to support our Outreach Program. The grant will last for two years and will assist with supplemental education services, tutoring, technology classes, recreational activities and English Language Learners (ELL). With Outreach sites available at Birch Creek, Valli Kee and Cascade King County Housing Authority homes, the grant will impact youth ranging in ages from 6-19. The three sites are home to low income individuals, as well as immigrants and refugees from the Horn of Africa, Asia and Hispanic speaking countries.

The goal is to have these kids and teenagers be at 85% of their grade level. Of the test group, a group whose progress we will track over the next two years and update you on via this blog, only one student was at 50% of their grade level. The work will be challenging for both our students and Outreach staff, but the need is great. We here at Kent Youth and Family Services want to thank the Safeco Insurance Foundation for recognizing the need and believing in us to overcome the obstacles which are holding so many of these kids back.

Check back to track their progress. In the next post on the Safeco Insurance Foundation Grant, we will provide you some background information on the group of students in our test group. Until then, thanks for reading.

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

<img style="background-image: none;
Here at Kent Youth and Family Services, we are often asked about the cost of our programming. Running four unique programs, also means they each have different costs associated with them. In an effort to be as transparent as possible and answer the questions posed by our donors/community members, our program managers provided the following numbers.

Youth and Family Counseling/Substance Abuse Counseling: $1400-$1800 per client

Outreach: $700

Watson Manor Transitional Housing Program: $13,000 per unit

Head Start and ECEAP: $11,000 per child per academic year

Together, these four programs reach close to 10,000 infants, youth, families and adults annually. So, as you can see the cost of “working toward a better future” is expensive, but there is no dollar amount that can be placed on the results. For $1400, we can teach a kid to love himself again and to look within himself for strength instead of drugs serving as a refuge. For $700, we can provide a safe place for kids to be educated and entertained instead of the streets providing their own brand of excitement. For $13,000, we can save a homeless mother (age 16-25) from desperation by providing shelter and a sense of purpose and direction. For $11,000, we can teach low income children that they too deserve a quality education and that their economic standing in this world shall not determine their future.

If you would like more information about how we do business and our results, please visit the website below. As always, if you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

http://www.kyfs.org/powerof40/

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

Half Off Hero

Kent Youth and Family Services has teamed up with www.HalfOffHero.com. We believe it can be used to help members of your community. That is why we created 5ON5. 5ON5 is a social media driven online fundraising campaign that challenges our fans and followers to donate $5 on the 5th of every month.

The funds will be used for programming purposes only. It will provide help to kids struggling with substance abuse, counseling to youth and families, a safe place for teens to go after school, a roof over the heads of homeless, single mothers and a comfortable learning environment for our Head Start and ECEAP learners.

The amount of money being requested may be small, but the impact it can make is almost immeasurable. To donate, visit the following website on the 5th of every month.

http://www.kyfs.org/donations.html

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

Restaurant Night Fundraiser

In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue and discovered America. You show up, eat and drink at a great local restaurant, and we make new friends and pocket a little of what Ol’ Christopher was looking for in the first place. The levy is expected to be certified with 69% of the voting citizens of King County endorsing (“yes”) on the renewal of this six year levy. This overwhelming support indicated the citizens of King County strongly support services that support our veterans their families and critical human services with their tax dollars. The levy generates roughly $14 million in revenue annually via a .05% per thousand of assessed property valuation, split evenly between enhanced veterans services and other human services, with roughly 1/3 of those dollars supporting these efforts in South King County.

It’s worth noting that Kent Youth and Family Services receives no funds directly from the Veterans and Human Services Levy. However, a number of our critical partners in the work we do are supported by the levy, partners without which KYFS’s work would be seriously eroded.

So, on behalf of the Board of Directors of Kent Youth and Family Services (an early endorser of the Veterans and Human Services Levy at its May 5, 2011 meeting, just three days after the King County Council unanimously placed it on the August 16th ballot), the staff of KYFS and the children and families we work with bettering their lives every day, “Thank You” for your resounding support of the renewal of the King County Veterans and Human Services Levy! August 31, 2011 is a day to celebrate.

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

Co-Occurring

The following story was prepared by Dennis Ballinger, Program Director for KYFS Youth/Family and Substance Abuse Counseling

Typically, the young people that are clients in the Co-Occurring Disorders Program are those youth who often rub people the wrong way, commit crimes and have an appearance that screams, “stay away.” Once you get beyond the hard exterior, you learn their misbehavior is often a result of an underlying emotional storm they are trying hard to keep contained. Often times, they cannot always keep the storm at bay, even with the use of illegal substance, and this when people see the misbehavior, the anger or the acting out. The following is the story of a young woman who was the most oppositional, angry, out of control 14 year old I have ever met during the 12 years of working with youth in substance abuse and mental health counseling.

This young, we will call her Shelly for the purpose of protecting her privacy, presented as youth who was, according to her caseworker, “always running away, oppositional, defiant and conduct disordered.” In talking with her caseworker, this young woman was removed from her home due to sexual abuse by her father, domestic violence between family members, substance abuse and child neglect. Given that upbringing, I asked myself, “how could we consider this young woman to be “conduct disordered” rather than acting how she was taught to act by her parents, modeling their behavior.”

When I started to work with her, she refused to talk, she refused to participate in group and she continually broke the rules. However, I felt what she needed most was someone who was not going to let them push her away. She needed someone who could see the person underneath the behaviors. The person in pain yearning to have someone listen and empathize with the abuse she had suffered, the loss of her childhood and her fear that the world is an even scarier place than her home was.

After one group, in which she was trying to break every single rule in order to get me to kick her out, I eventually had to ask her to leave group, but instead of sending her home, I made her wait for me in the reception area. At the end of group, I sat down with her and told her, “no matter what she does, she is going to have to continue attending services and I was not going to allow her to push me away as she had everyone else in her life. At this moment, I could see her crack, just a bit, but some of that tough exterior started to fall and she started to open up with me.

Things were never a bed of roses over the next couple of months she was in treatment. She still reverted back to protective behaviors, but it started to occur less and less. She started to open up more and more. Eventually, she started to deal with some of her issues. She eventually completed group. She was clean, sober and functioning at a higher level. She was moved to a group home out of the area, so services had to conclude. However, every once in a while I have received a letter from her updating me on how she is doing. At last report, she still struggles with trusting people, but said she was happy and she now has “faith that people aren’t all bad.”

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

Insight

The following was prepared by Theresa LaRonde, Program Director for Head Start and ECEAP

We have all heard the saying, “it takes a village to raise a child.” It is strong partnerships within Kent Youth and Family Services, the community, school districts and most importantly, with the parents, to help bring about successful interventions and skill development.

We had a child at one of our sites that was a very inquisitive, bright, active four year old. He showed empathy and concern for his peers, however, he also struggled with impulsive actions and personal boundaries. His behavior caused his peers to shy away from playing with him, making it more difficult for him to develop relationships with his peers. The teachers worked with him, coaching him, role modeling and practicing appropriate behavior. Program staff had numerous conversations with his parents and began to understand their living situation held some clues to his behavior. His parents did not live together, but worked very hard to partner in support and provide for his needs.

Mom, another sibling and our four year old boy lived in the basement of her parents’ home, while the father and his oldest daughter lived nearby. Mom’s work schedule was nights, while Dad’s shift was early in the day. Therefore, dad met him at the bus stop and cared for him at his house until Mom was off work late in the evening. Mom would wake him up, take him home and get him back to bed very late at night. Both parents saw their child struggling socially and were very concerned.

Staff discussed the opportunity of utilizing KYFS Counseling Services and the parents agreed to let him begin sessions. The four year old met with a counselor once a week and he was also observed by the Special Education Specialist based at the Kent Family Center. The Special Education Specialist was very supportive of the family and worked with the teaching staff, Mom and Dad to develop a behavior plan that would include the same responses from school staff and both parents while dealing with the challenging situations they faced daily. The KYFS counselor was also able to provide guidance for the family and child. With KYFS counselors being available in most of the Kent School District schools, these services can continue with his transition into kindergarten.

Through the support services put into practice, he has developed social skills and can better interact with his peers. The parents, as his key support system, are continuing to work together to support a successful transition into kindergarten and more successful success peer interactions ahead.

Student Mentor

The following was prepared by Cyoon McBride, Outreach Director for Kent Youth and Family Services

Some of my favorite moments involve seeing how deeply introspective kids can be. During a Leadership Club meeting, I asked the kids (along with Mohamed, 16 and a special guest) what one positive act they had committed in the past week. Per the usual, the younger kids mentioned picking things off of the ground for their friends, stopping fights or standing up for their friends.

Mohamed, on the other hand, mentioned helping to stop his parents from fighting. Now, my impression of Mohamed thus far has been that of a typical teenager-rebellious and apathetic-so I was struck by the thoughtfulness of his comment. Furthermore, the rest of the younger kids (ages 9-10) commented about their own family troubles as well.

Maazin poignantly wished he had been born before his parents divorced, so he could have tried to stop it. Comments like these remind me of how perspective kids can be. We must make every interaction with them an educational one.

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

Making a Difference

The following story was written by Cyoon McBride, Outreach Program Director

I always try and make each interaction with a kid a formative one. In this job, you never know which moment might flip the switch of inspiration or discouragement. To this aim, I listen, I talk and I encourage. I often wonder if anything I do, makes an actual difference, though one moment gave me important encouragement.

We had just gotten out of our second meeting of the Leadership Club. The kids and I were in the gym waiting to join a game of dodgeball. Before long, one of my kids, Maazin, got into a spat with another kid over some sort of disagreement. Much to my surprise, Abdirahimi, a member of the Leadership Club, intervened before I had to myself. Abdirahimi emphatically tapped Maazin on the arm and exclaimed, “Leader!” He wanted to remind Maazin to embody the leadership qualities we had just talked about in Leadership Club. I will wax sentimental and say my heart was thoroughly warmed. I will never cease to be impressed by children and their potential. Everyday, I am reminded of the importance of each interaction with them.

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

Georgetown Masquerade Gala: Registration Now Open

You are invited to Georgetown Masquerade Gala, Kent Youth and Family Services annual event and auction. My attempts to talk to them about their behavior has always been made difficult by the youth center’s constant hustle and bustle.

Seeking a more formal time to discuss values and role model behavior with the youth, I started the Leadership Club in February. I was very surprised by our youth’s eagerness to simply talk, especially given their age, 10-13, but talk is exactly what we do, sitting around a table for 30-40 minutes at a time.

The youth are incredibly insightful. Thus far, I have asked probing questions such as, “What is something nice you have done recently.” “How does it make you feel when you are bullied?” Why do you tease others?” I used examples of fights I have noticed at the youth center and we discuss the manner in which they carried themselves, as well as their subsequent actions. We then work our way to scenarios in which the conflict could have been resolved differently.

One day, I posed a different question, but along the same lines. I asked, “why do you use fights to resolve problems.” Abdikadir very poignantly asked, “Isn’t that what kids do?” Abdikadir then went on to talk about his behavior in a composed, objective manner. He could have simply used the fact that he was mad as an excuse, but he didn’t, which left me impressed.

I am wholly convinced that our youth simply want adults who will listen to them and treat them as equals. Youth want their ideas and thoughts validated. Too often, we simply talk at children. We should engage them in a two way conversation. Adults may have the authority, but sometimes we need to sit down at the same table with our youth and just talk as equals. We never know the impact it will have.

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

Kent Youth &
Every year, our Head Start and ECEAP program makes a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of children, but over the past year, one little boy’s success story stood out among the rest. For privacy reasons, we have changed his name to Timmy and this is his ECEAP story,

Four months before Timmy started preschool with the Kent Youth and Family Services ECEAP program, he and his older sister woke up to find their mother had passed away sometime during the night. With no one to turn to, Timmy’s 69 year old maternal grandmother stepped up to the plate to raise him and his older sister.

Timmy was bright, creative and imaginative. However, about a week into the school year, he began showing a lot of aggression towards the other kids and teachers. He was unable to regulate his emotions, going from happy to very angry and hurting the other children without warning. When he was angry, he would scream at the teachers and other children.

On one occasion, he hit another boy on the chin with a wooden block, because the boy didn’t want to play with him. Another time, he bit another boy on the chest while waiting in line, because the boy got in front of him.

Several parents came forward to express their concerns for their children’s safety. At was at this point, the ECEAP developed a behavioral plan for Timmy that included placing an additional assistant in the classroom and referring him for some much needed counseling at Kent Youth and Family Services Counseling program. With the support of the classroom assistant and the teacher, Timmy was shadowed and coached emotionally. He was given models of proper behavior and words to use when interacting with classmates and other teachers. The new behavior plan also helped the teachers keep him and other teachers safe.

It was a long and difficult process, but by the end of the first quarter, Timmy started to show signs of improvement. He was hitting less and using his words more. Overall, he was a happier child and that led to other kids trusting him and wanting to be his friend. By the middle of the school year, the teachers were able to shadow less, because his interactions were becoming much more positive. His grandmother was overjoyed and grateful to the staff for being patient with Timmy and for setting him up for success instead of failure.

Kent Youth and Family Services ECEAP program provided Timmy a safe and nurturing learning environment. The actions of the staff prepared him socially and emotionally for kindergarten. More importantly, the teachers made him feel special and every child deserves that feeling.

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

New American Story.mp4

Gay Straight Alliance

High school is an awkward time for every teenager. It is the time is a young person’s life when they switch from self realization to self actualization. It is also a time of discovery and when we all begin to question the world around us. Everything about us as people is laid upon the table and the question of who we are to become begins being asked and answered.

Kent Phoenix Academy and Communities in Schools with summer assistance from Kent Youth and Family Services, have joined forces to provide a forum where some of life’s more difficult challenges can be met with support. That support comes in the form of the Gay Straight Alliance.

The GSA program is two years old and has a weekly attendance of 15-18 KPA students. These students identify or are beginning to identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Questioning. At GSA meetings, with the guidance of faculty member Ginger Colamussi, students find a comfortable place to be themselves without the fear of bullying or judgment. Students also discuss topics such as the “coming out” process, interacting with LGBT families, religion and sexual orientation, LGBT terminology and much more. Members are also given the opportunity to step into leadership roles with the planning of social events, workshops and activities in which the entire school can participate. Their activities are listed below:

LGBT History Month

Wear Purple Day and Bullying Prevention

Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network Leadership Summit

GLSEN Day of Silence

GLSEN Student of Color Conference

Pride Prom at Green River Community College

Summer GSA Club sponsored by Kent Phoenix Academy, Communities in Schools and Kent Youth and Family Services

The purpose of the group is multifaceted. The most important thing is to add to the success of the students and assist them in getting a quality education. The second purpose is to create an ally organization for LGBT and Straight students to participate. The final purpose is to defeat stereotypes and foster a safe environment for students to express themselves.

KYFS is proud to also offer a summer GSA group in conjunction with Kent Phoenix Academy and Communities in Schools. Together, we are offering a safe place for students to continue their growth while they are enjoying their time away from school. With 10% of KPA students saying GSA has significantly contributed to their success at school and 57% of teachers saying the group has had a positive impact students’ success at school, it appears to be working. The proof can be found in the quotes below.

“GSA helped many of my friends transition “out-of-the-closet.” Without GSA, I don’t know if they ever would’ve been comfortable telling people who they really are! –KPA Student, 2011

“GSA at KPA has significantly improved my students’ success and attendance in my classroom. GSA contributes to positive student interaction and enhances and supports other anti-bullying measure in our schools. –KPA Teacher. 2011

“Working toward a better future,”

-Kent Youth and Family Services

Volunteering at Lighthouse

Teen Summer Fit Camp

According to the Washington State Department of Health, obesity numbers in Washington State have more than doubled in the last two decades, increasing from 10% to 27%. Those racial groups seeing the greatest percentage of obesity are American Indian/Alaskan Native at 37%, Pacific Islander at 35% and African American at 33%. Furthermore, those earning $35,000 or less a year were at a 37% obesity rate and those with a high school education or less were at 32%. Finally, 21% of people living in King County are obese with Washington State ranking 28 out 50.

We at Kent Youth and Family Services know these numbers can be hard to digest, but also know something can be done about them. That is why we are offering a Teen Summer Fit Camp. The camp is aimed at youth from 13-18, because we know the earlier proper eating and exercise skills are taught, the better the chance we have at bringing these numbers done.

At our Teen Summer Fit Camp, teens will participate in an 8 week, 2 days a week exercise and nutrition course. Teens will have the opportunity to participate in a 5K race, kickboxing, zumba classes, boot camp, hikes and much, much more. The class will meet at Earthworks Park from 1-2:30 PM on every Tuesday and Thursday. The fee for the program is $40 and scholarships are available.

Teens will learn how to have a healthy relationship with food and will also develop a social network for the summer. For more information on this program, contact Frewin Hermer at (253) 859-0300.

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

Count Us In

Written by Nathan Box: Kent Youth and Family Services, Fund Developer
In early May, my boss sent out an email looking for volunteers for an event called “Count Us In.” Scanning through the email, I instantly thought this would be a great way to score some points with the boss. I have only been here since February, so I could use all the points I can get. I entered the date on my Outlook calendar and didn’t think much about it after that.

Soon, May 25th rolled around and I was introduced to the evening’s effort. Count Us In was and is a collaborative effort between Teen Feed, United Way of King County and other agencies across King County. The mission was census focused on gathering data on the number of youth and young adults on one night that are struggling to find safe and stable housing.

By the end evening of 374 people from all over King County attended 8 different sites. They were offered a free meal, got some bus tickets and were provided the opportunity to talk with trained staff and volunteers about their housing situation.

I, along with volunteers from Valley Cities and Auburn Youth Resources, was at the South King County site which was located at the Kent Commons in downtown Kent. I was tasked with transporting youth from a drop off site to the Kent Commons. After waiting for an hour or so, we hadn’t seen any youth/young adults. My group decided to head back down the hill and see how things were going at the Commons.
Upon arrival, we discovered the numbers for our area were pretty low. The two women who I was with, having worked with homeless youth for some time, set out on a mission to several locations that they knew were where homeless youth congregated or slept for the night. We looked under bridges, visited local libraries, went to playgrounds and made stops at some Kent parks.

At the Kent King County Library, we met some kids who were homeless, but were using the library’s computers to find jobs. We invited them to the Kent Commons for some food. Some took us up on the offer, some did not. After leaving the library, we drove by the park adjacent to the library. There, we encountered and engaged three boys, aged 12-17. We explained who we were and what we were doing. Together, with the boys we headed to the Commons. The boys got information on temporary housing, counseling and health clinics. A counselor from Valley Cities made arrangements to get they boys sleeping bags, a tent and supplies. I was blown away by the whole process.

See, I am lucky. I am really privileged. I grew up in a small town in southwestern Oklahoma. I am the son of a nurse and a electrician. We were by no means rich, but what we didn’t have in things of monetary value, my parents made up with love, support and the tools to not only reach my aspirations, but the mechanisms to make those aspirations a reality. Meeting a 12 year old homeless kid changed my life. It crushed my worldview. Sure, I have seen homeless youth before. I used to volunteer at the Oklahoma City Rescue Mission. I saw parents and kids all the time, but never have I seen a kid so alone. I began to wonder what happened. What caused this child to leave the comforts of his home? Who didn’t believe in him? Who did him wrong? My mind created stories and scenarios beyond a reality I will never know.

I do know one thing. Count Us In, was meant to be a changing moment for the 374 youth and young adults we served, but as in most cases of volunteering you get more than you give. It was an earth shattering experience I will never forget. I am so grateful, I took the time to try and suck up to my boss.

Working toward a better future,
-Kent Youth and Family Services

Lighthouse

Believe, Connect, Serve, Share. Simple concepts when laid out in this order, but when melded together and put into practice they have the power to change lives. Cornerstone United Methodist Church puts them into practice everyday and for the last year the kids, parents and staff at our Lighthouse program in Covington have been the beneficiaries of those words put into motion.

Meeting with Carol Nahavec, member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, her passion for change is palpable. Together with her fellow church members, they decided to focus their energies on bringing about that change and they knew they wanted it to be somewhere close to home. They set out with a mission to provide food for local kids, a place for them to get off the streets, positive role models and adults to assist with homework and the issues of everyday teenage life. After meeting with Robert White, Kent Youth and Family Services: Lighthouse program, they found the venue and program that would allow them to see their dream come to fruition.

Upon beginning their work with the Lighthouse kids, Carol and her fellow volunteers were worried about working with junior high students and their ability to relate to each other, but Cornerstone’s members knew they way to get any teenager to open up is with food. So, every single Monday for an entire year they came armed with home cooked meals or food from local restaurants. Food opened the door and once opened, they were free to help kids with homework, hold discussions aimed at educating teens, play games and mentor the kids in positive, supportive environments.

Talking with Carol, as she reflected on the last year of service, you can tell the impact made was a two way street. She called the experience “rewarding” and raved about “how willing the kids were to change and grow.” At the same time, she spoke of the “impression and difference the kids had made on her, her fellow volunteers and the entire congregation.”

As the congregation of Cornerstone moves onto their next yearly, local volunteer project, Carol shared this final hope. “I hope some other group will step up to the plate.” So, if you or a group of friends are interested in “stepping up to the plate.” Please contact Kent Youth and Family Services at (253) 859-0300.
On behalf of the board members and staff of KYFS, we want to extend a heart filled thank you to everyone at Cornerstone United Methodist Church who has helped make a difference in the lives of some very deserving kids.

Working toward a better future,
-Kent Youth and Family Services

The Loss of a Friend

We are sad to announce, we have lost a dear friend here at KYFS. Linda Dorsett, former Executive Director at KYFS from the late 70’s to mid 80’s was tragically killed in an accident near her home in Maple Falls on June 17th.

Linda was the Executive Director who moved the agency from the original site (known at the time as "The Sixth Chamber") on N. 4th Ave. just north of James St. to the Kent Commons. Towards the end of her tenure she, along with the board of directors began the work that would eventually secure the Titus Building in Downtown Kent, where the agency is to this day. After that, she stepped down as the Executive Director, but continued for some time as the Substance Abuse Supervisor. She eventually went into private practice in the Bothell area and then moved to rural Whatcom County where she opened a bed and breakfast, as well as a consulting practice with her husband. Most recently, she was active in bringing broadband Internet access to rural communities across the country, specifically portions of Whatcom County and could talk with you at length about the importance of high speed Internet access in rural America.

KYFS is what is today, in part, due to her leadership. We were honored she returned to celebrate KYFS with us and 400 friends last Oct. 2nd. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and those who knew her best. She helped people until her last breath on this earth and we are grateful she chose to spend a portion of her life with us.

Working toward a better future,
-Kent Youth and Family Services

New American Story.mp4

The Georgetown Masquerade Gala

Since 1970, Kent Youth and Family Services has provided critical services for children, youth and families throughout South King County. As a non-profit organization that began around kitchen tables of concerned parents, we’ve grown into a multi-faceted organization serving hundreds of families each month with professional counseling, education programming and support services.

On Saturday, September 24, 2011 we will celebrate another year of achievement with a festive evening at the Georgetown Ballroom in Seattle. You are cordially invited to join us for the “The Georgetown Masquerade Gala,” our annual dinner and auction. With great food, entertainment and a heart pounding live and silent auction, it promises to be a memorable evening.

You are invited to participate in our gala with the gift of an item, gift certificate, cash or event sponsorship. To obtain a procurement or sponsorship form listing your benefits as a supporter, please email nathanb@kyfs.org or call (253) 859-0300 and ask for Nathan Box. For $4 per ticket or two tickets for $5 and a portion of the evening’s food and beverage sales benefiting KYFS, this is sure to be an event unlike any you have attended before.

Also, if you are feeling the itch to recite some original poetry, need to move an audience to an acoustic guitar performance, can make people laugh or have a talent that everyone must see, we want to see you at this event. We will be awarding prizes for crowd favorites and this will be a great opportunity to put your skills on display.

So, whether you are performing or just looking for a night out, we hope to see you at Urbia on the 24th.

Working toward a better future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services

Give Big

On June 23rd, 2011 from 7 A.M. to midnight. Stories littered the nightly news of neighbors whose homes were being foreclosed, jobs that were lost and bank accounts drained trying to make ends meet.
For Nolan, Bryce and Jon (last names omitted for privacy reasons), the new American story has become all too familiar. Jon was faced with foreclosure on his home, job loss, absence of unemployment benefits and a wife losing a battle with alcoholism. The snowball of the great recession was beginning to avalanche down on him and his family.

Meeting with Jon, he described sleepless nights where racing thoughts of how to hold his world together kept him tossing and turning. He was in the midst of everything he had known and come to love falling apart. He didn’t know where to turn. He didn’t know where help would come from.

Jon could see the toll real world realizations were having on his family. Nolan was becoming depressed. He was finding safety behind closed bedroom doors. The notion of running away was becoming a common threat. Bryce, the older of the two, was becoming unresponsive and distracted. Caught between his shock, embarrassment and trying to be a good older brother, he was finding himself unable to cope with the changes being thrust upon himself and his family.

In these situations, society and our social interactions have programmed us to believe, it is the man who usually cuts his loses and runs. In some, maybe most, situations this notion holds some weight, but not for Jon. He decided to fight. He decided to take a stand for himself and his family. He wanted to deliver on his promise of delivering a better life for his boys, but he knew he couldn’t do it alone. Having reached the climax of foreclosure and at a low point, Jon followed a recommendation from an East Hill Kent teacher and brought his family to Kent Youth and Family Services.

For the past six months, Jon, Nolan and Bryce have worked with Missa Braund-Allen, youth/family counselor at KYFS. Using unique forms of art therapy and counseling, the family expressed pinned up emotions, learned new ways of doing old routines and most importantly, rediscovered the underlying love that never really went away, but instead served as a glue holding this family together.

Together, they have found a refocused energy. Both boys have found a sense of normalcy in school and friends. Jon, currently a student at Highline Community College, is working on a degree in Administration of Justice with aspirations of working for Homeland Security. They have a found a rental house that is becoming home. The marriage didn’t survive, but all three seem to express it was for the best.
When interviewing Jon and his two sons, he was asked to express his thoughts on the work done by Kent Youth and Family Services on his family’s behalf. He emotionally stated, “I believe Kent Youth and Family Services saved my family.”

Prepared by Nathan Box, Fund Developer, Kent Youth and Family Services
Working for a better future,
-Kent Youth and Family Services

KYFS Head Start/ECEAP Class Heads to Maggie's

At KYFS, we believe that education should start at any early age. That's why we offer our Head Start/ECEAP program to kids in South King County who qualify. But no one said learning couldn't be fun! In fact, we thrive on fun. Two of our classes of 4 year olds had the opportunity to have a bit of fun while learning about the restaurant biz on Tuesday. The classes traveled with their teachers and parent chaperones to Maggie's on Meeker, a favorite breakfast and lunch hangout. They toured the restaurant, visited the kitchen and dish washing room, learned how to take an order and set a table, scooped muffin batter and cut up fresh fruit. When they were done, they took the baked muffins and fresh fruit back to school for a healthy snack! Sue Froyd, owner of Maggie's, lead the tour as a member of Kent AM Kiwanis. Four other volunteers from the club were on hand to help.
The following was prepared by Pam Taylor, Valley Cities Counseling and Consultation

“Coming Up” is an innovative collaboration combing the expertise and resources of three nonprofit community organization to place homeless person age 18-25 into housing combined with support services specifically tailored to the development needs of young adults. The three partnering organizations (Valley Cities Counseling and Consultation, Kent Youth and Family Services and Auburn Youth Resources) worked together with other stakeholders over the course of a year to develop “A Plan to End Young Adult Homelessness in King County” as part of the Youth and Young Adult Sub-committee of the the Committee to End Homelessness in King County. We developed an understanding among ourselves and funders about the system and programs gaps and designed a supportive housing program model that addresses the priority needs of homeless young adults in South King County. The Coming Up program is an outgrowth of this work.

Ken Taylor, Valley Cities CEO, Mike Heinisch, KYFS Executive Director, and Jim Blanchard, AYR Executive Director concur that the Coming Up Program truly shows that “it takes a village…” This projects is possible, because agencies, funders and the community at large worked together and continue to work together to end young adult homelessness. Other funding partners include King County, United Way of King County, King County Housing Authority, private sector landlords, the Seattle Foundation, Boeing Employees and Kona Kai Coffee Company.

The Evergreen Award is given by the Alliance of Nonprofits, a nonprofit membership association of over 300 nonprofits in the Puget Sound region united in the common effort to promote a powerful nonprofit sector. The Alliance of Nonprofits was founded in 2000; it evolved from the long standing Executive Director’s Coalition (EDC). The Evergreen Award has been presented annually for the past 17 years to top organizations in the nonprofit sector in Washington. This is the largest amount KYFS has ever received.

It is a privilege to live in a community with such generosity. I would spend hours enthralled with story board tiles leading me from one bubble to another weaving together complex stories and allowing me to dream impossible dreams. Now, as an adult, I must be honest and let you know that the comic book nerd in me still exists. During high school and college, my inner nerd may have lay dormant, but with the rebirth of movies based on my beloved stories, he is shining once again.

Like most kids, I loved superheroes like Superman, Spiderman, Daredevil and the X-Men, but my absolute favorite was Batman. Even though Bruce Wayne (the man under the mask) was more intelligent, stronger and wealthy than I would ever be, I found him relatable. See, Batman had no special powers. He didn’t come from Krypton. He didn’t shoot web or crawl up walls. He most definitely wasn’t born with mutant powers. He was just stronger, faster and smarter than his enemies. He was a normal guy who used his talents in extraordinary ways.

In a lot of ways, Bruce Wayne is a lot like Mike Heinisch, Director of Kent Youth and Family Services. Mike has recently been named a Superhero by Parent Map Magazine, but Mike is just a caring individual who possesses insight, vision and a big heart for the youth and families of the Kent Valley. He comes to work everyday seeking to advance the interests of those who need our help the most. In more ways than one, Mike is a modern day superhero. He may not possess a utility belt, cool gadgets and a bat mobile, but when the signal shines in the sky for someone who needs help, you can rest assured Mike Heinisch will be there.

www.parentmap.com

Written by Nathan Box, Fund Developer, Kent Youth and Family Services.

Working Towards a Better Future,

-Kent Youth and Family Services.

Advocating for Washington’s Children

<img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="Sen. Which is exactly what happens everyday at Watson Manor. Watson Manor is a transitional living program providing housing and support services to youth and young adult, single, homeless mothers. The residents represent quite possibly one of the most disenfranchised populations in King Country. Very few of us will ever understand the difficulty of beginning your adult life pregnant or with one to two children and worried about the lack of a roof over your head. To overcome it on your own is a daunting task and one that can be rarely accomplished on your own. That is where we come in.

Each resident has a program tailored to their needs including case management, parent education, life skills training, counseling, substance abuse services and referral to childcare, as well as educational and vocational programs. Each resident is between the ages of 16-25 upon entering the program and are offered a hand up in life.

Life at Watson Manor is about transformation, independence, growth and assimilation into society as a whole. More importantly, every resident is treated with dignity and respect. Our Watson Manor staff are committed to fundamental change within the lives of each and every person who walks through the doors of Watson Manor. It wakes us up, calms us after stressful meetings and provides a warming place to go after fighting the rain to get home to the one’s we love. We might disagree on whose coffee is the best, some despise corporate chains, others, love the familiar, but there is no arguing that we love the stuff.

Tucked away in the Regional Justice Center in downtown Kent is a little coffee shop serving more than snacks and a jump start to every morning. With every order, the at risk and troubled youth behind the counter are given the opportunity to learn job skills, communicate with the general public, customer service and the most important thing, an opportunity to succeed.

The youth are engaged and empowered to be responsible. What they learn in this little stand, will last them a lifetime. They are offered friendly advice, course correction and maybe for the first time in their lives, compliments on a job well done. Things that may seem pretty basic to you and I, are life changing moments for the youth in our community.

So, the next time you need to feed that addiction, pass up your local stop, head over to the RJC and order some coffee with a purpose. It may be the most important cup you have ever ordered.

-Working for a Better Future

Kent Youth and Family Services

Kent Youth &
